So, indirectly, the Mafia helped American gay people become what they are now.

Yeah, it was an interesting connection. The mafia also extorted wealthy individuals who wanted to keep their love life quiet.
They bought the building, hired people to run it, took a take of the profit, didn't pay for police protections, and extorted people.
What a racket.
What does this mean?
"Labor Day reminds us that the military does not exclusively give or protect our freedoms."
We focus on celebrating our military as the exclusive provider of freedoms.
I’ve even seen public comments from leaders thanking our service men and women for the freedoms given on Labor Day.
My point is that Labor Day is a good reminder of the totality of work by many different constituencies to make our freedom happen.
