Thanks for this today. In two places, it reminded me that people and places can change, and it’s hard to understand why. In the case of James Meredith, who was a hero when he integrated the University of Mississippi and marched with MLK Jr., inexplicably turned into a conservative supporter of avowed racists. Why? What happened to him to make him change? And the second case is Frank Church, a great Senator, and a Democrat from, of all places, Idaho. What made the people of Idaho stop voting for Democrats?
By my recollection he did that 714 times in the regular season. 60 of those were in 1927, which was more than any other single team in the American League that year. Kind of crazy.

It’s always strange when people vote against their own interests. 😱
Meredith has said Helms was the only person who offered him a job, and I have no idea why he went back to supporting Barnett, let alone Duke.
Too many conservative Democrats from the plains states are gone. I think the parallels between them and the rise of the right win media are the same.
Let’s be fair to Babe Ruth. Though his diet *primarily* consisted of hotdogs, beer, and cigarettes, he also smoked a ton of cigars and liked Scotch.
He also believed the only exercise was walking around the bases after launching bombs into the bleachers.

The power of scotch.
